Support for Friends & Family of Brain Injury Survivors

At Kamloops Brain Injury Association (KBIA), we understand that brain injury affects more than just the survivo, it impacts the entire circle of family and friends. Whether you're a spouse, parent, sibling, friend, or caregiver, you may be navigating unfamiliar challenges, emotions, and questions. You’re not alone.

You're Part of the Recovery Journey

As someone close to a person with a brain injury, your support can make a meaningful difference in their recovery and long-term wellbeing. But supporting someone through brain injury can also be emotionally exhausting and, at times, isolating. That’s why we offer support not only for survivors—but for you, too.

What You Can Do to Support a Loved One with a Brain Injury

Brain injury can cause changes in memory, communication, behavior, mood, and physical ability. It’s not always visible, and it’s often misunderstood. Here are some meaningful ways you can support someone who’s healing:

  • Learn about brain injury. Understanding the effects of brain injury helps reduce frustration and sets realistic expectations.

  • Be patient and flexible. Healing is not linear, and your loved one may have good days and bad days.

  • Support their independence. Encourage their abilities while being there for the tasks they struggle with.

  • Communicate clearly. Keep communication simple, slow, and calm—and listen without rushing.

  • Take care of yourself. The better you care for your own mental and physical health, the more effectively you can support someone else.

Monthly Caregiver & Family Support Group

We offer a monthly support group designed specifically for friends, family members, and caregivers of brain injury survivors. This is a safe, welcoming space where you can:

  • Share your experiences with others who truly understand

  • Learn strategies for navigating daily challenges

  • Ask questions and get guidance from experienced facilitators

  • Find emotional support and community

Whether you're a long-term caregiver or new to this journey, you're welcome here.
